About This Photography Workshop

Duration: 8:00am until around 3pm

Our day begins at a coffee shop where Kevin shares some foundational teaching to get you ready for the day ahead. Chiang Mai’s biggest and busiest markets are where we start our photography. Here you’ll learn more about light and gain understanding as to why it’s the essential ingredient of photography. We’ll teach you how your camera reads and responds to light, and how to make a good exposure. Understanding this will give you greater scope to be creative in your image making.

You will learn composition technique and how to look more carefully. We’ll demonstrate the impact point of view has when framing your subject. You will gain a new appreciation of what you see when you look through your camera.

At the market we also focus on teaching about photographing people. Northern Thai people generally are not shy of being photographed. In every culture being sensitive and polite is very important. We will address this subject as we photograph the locals in their everyday work environments.

The ‘decisive moment’ – capturing the action and story telling with your photos are two other topics we will talk about throughout the day.

After lunch there are two options except during the hot season when only Option A is available.

Option A

Afternoons in Chiang Mai can be pretty hot, especially from March until June so we will sit in a cool, relaxed environment, enjoy an iced coffee, soda or fruit drink and look over the images you have made during the morning. We will teach you our tried and true workflow for culling and beginning to edit your images. If you have your own laptop or tablet please bring it along or we can use our laptop to view your images.

Option B

After lunch we visit some restful locations and change pace to allow you to experiment more with your camera’s settings. Low light photography and more about composition can also feature in the afternoon’s workshop. You will learn how using a wide aperture can isolate your subject even against a cluttered background. We can also teach about flash photography.

At our last stop for the day, you will be photographing craftspeople working on pressed metal, three-dimensional pictures at one of Chiang Mai’s most beautifully decorated temples. At this location we experience a challenging situation to bring together much of what we have learned during the day – looking again at lighting, capturing the action, shutter speed and aperture control and isolating your subject. The ordination hall at the temple is a fabulous focus for some teaching on architectural photography to end our day.
